Early Life

Abigail Pierrepont Johnson was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 19, 1961. She grew up with her younger siblings in an environment where they did not feel pressured to join the family business. From a young age, Johnson developed an interest in her father’s work.

She attended Buckingham Browne & Nichols School, a private school in Cambridge, Massachusetts, before going on to graduate with a bachelor's degree in art history from William Smith College in 1984. After completing her undergraduate studies, Johnson worked as a consultant at Booz Allen Hamilton, where she met her husband. She later pursued an MBA at Harvard Business School.

Fidelity Investments

After graduating from Harvard Business School in 1988, Abigail Johnson joined Fidelity Investments, the company founded by her grandfather Edward C. Johnson II in 1946, and led by her father, Edward C. Johnson III, who was the CEO at the time. Johnson began her career at Fidelity as an analyst and portfolio manager.

In 2001, she was promoted to president of Fidelity Asset Management. During her tenure in this role, Johnson attempted, though unsuccessfully, to orchestrate a vote to remove her father as CEO due to disagreements over his business decisions.

In 2005, she became Head of Retail, Workplace, and Institutional Business, and was named president of Fidelity in 2012. In 2014, she succeeded her father as CEO, and in 2016, she also became chairman, gaining full control of the company.

Under her leadership, Fidelity made significant strides, including introducing cryptocurrency investment options in 2018. This initiative enabled institutional investors to trade Bitcoin and Ether, positioning Fidelity as a major player in the evolving cryptocurrency space.

Politics

In 2015, Abigail Johnson made a political donation of $2,700, the maximum amount legally permitted for presidential primary campaigns, to Republican candidate Jeb Bush. However, in 2016, she shifted her political contributions, donating approximately $330,000 to Hillary Clinton's campaign and the Democratic National Committee.

Awards and Honors

Abigail Johnson has held several influential positions throughout her career. She served as a member of the Committee on Capital Markets Regulation and was a board member of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). Additionally, she has served on the board of directors of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

Johnson is also notable for being the first and only woman to serve on the board of the Financial Services Forum, a prestigious organization comprising the CEOs of major financial services firms.
