Justin Trudeau

Justin Pierre James Trudeau (born December 25, 1971) is a Canadian politician who has served as the 23rd and current prime minister of Canada since 2015 and has led the Liberal Party since 2013.

Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Trudeau attended Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf and later earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from McGill University, followed by a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia. He initially worked as a secondary school teacher in Vancouver before returning to Montreal in 2002 to continue his education. He also held leadership roles, including chairing the youth charity Katimavik and serving as a director at the Canadian Avalanche Association. In 2006, he became chair of the Liberal Party's Task Force on Youth Renewal.

Trudeau entered federal politics in 2008 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Papineau. He later took on roles as the Liberal Party’s Official Opposition critic for youth and multiculturalism in 2009, critic for citizenship and immigration in 2010, and critic for secondary education and sport in 2011. In 2013, he was elected leader of the Liberal Party, and in the 2015 federal election, he led the party to a majority government. This victory made him the second-youngest prime minister in Canadian history and the first to follow in the footsteps of a former prime minister, his father, Pierre Trudeau.

During his first term, Trudeau’s administration introduced key initiatives such as the Canada Child Benefit, the legalization of medical assistance in dying, and the legalization of recreational marijuana through the Cannabis Act. His government also pursued Senate appointment reforms, created the Independent Advisory Board for Senate Appointments, and implemented a federal carbon tax. In foreign policy, his government played a crucial role in negotiating major trade agreements, including the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) and the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. Canada also signed the Paris Agreement on climate change under his leadership.

However, Trudeau’s tenure has also seen controversy, as he was found to have violated Canada’s conflict of interest laws in both the Aga Khan affair and the SNC-Lavalin affair, leading to official sanctions from the country’s ethics commissioner.

Early life

Birth and Ancestry of Justin Trudeau

On June 23, 1971, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) announced that Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his wife of four months, Margaret Trudeau (née Sinclair), were expecting a child in December. Justin Pierre James Trudeau was born on December 25, 1971, at 9:27 pm EST at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. He became the second child in Canadian history to be born while a sitting prime minister was in office, following Margaret Mary Theodora Macdonald, daughter of John A. Macdonald, who was born in 1869. Justin Trudeau later became an older brother to Alexandre (Sacha), born on December 25, 1973, and Michel, born on October 2, 1975, who tragically passed away in an avalanche in 1998.

Trudeau has a diverse heritage, with predominantly Scottish and French Canadian ancestry. His paternal grandfather, Charles-Émile Trudeau, was a businessman, while his maternal grandfather, James Sinclair, was a Scottish-born politician who served as Canada’s minister of fisheries in the cabinet of Prime Minister Louis St. Laurent. On his mother’s side, his great-grandfather, Thomas Bernard, was born in Makassar, Indonesia, and migrated to Penticton, British Columbia, in 1906 at the age of 15. Trudeau also has familial ties to the Bernard family, who are associated with the Earls of Bandon, and is a fifth great-grandson of Major-General William Farquhar, a key figure in the establishment of modern Singapore. Additionally, he has distant Malaccan and Nias ancestry.

Trudeau was baptized at Ottawa’s Notre Dame Basilica on January 16, 1972, with his father’s niece, Anne Rouleau-Danis, serving as his godmother and his mother’s brother-in-law, Thomas Walker, as his godfather. This event marked his first public appearance. On April 14, 1972, Pierre and Margaret Trudeau hosted a gala at the National Arts Centre, attended by U.S. President Richard Nixon. During the event, Nixon made a toast, referring to Justin as "the future prime minister of Canada." In response, Pierre Trudeau remarked that if his son ever assumed the role, he hoped he would lead with the "grace and skill" of the U.S. president. Earlier that day, First Lady Pat Nixon visited Justin in his nursery and gifted him a stuffed Snoopy toy.

Prime Minister of Canada (2015–present)

Justin Trudeau and his Cabinet were officially sworn into office by Governor General David Johnston on November 4, 2015, marking the beginning of the 29th Canadian Ministry. Trudeau outlined his first legislative priority as lowering taxes for middle-income Canadians while increasing taxes on the top 1% of income earners, a measure he intended to implement once Parliament reconvened on December 3, 2015. He also pledged to rebuild relations with Indigenous peoples and committed to leading an open, ethical, and transparent government.

One of the initial policy changes under Trudeau’s leadership was the reinstatement of the mandatory long-form census, which had been eliminated in 2010. The Liberal government announced this decision on November 5, 2015, during their first caucus meeting after securing a majority. Trudeau’s economic strategy focused on increased tax revenues to fund expanded government programs. Although the budget was not balanced, his administration successfully reduced Canada’s debt-to-GDP ratio each year until 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic led to a shift in fiscal priorities. His progressive stance on social issues included strong advocacy for abortion rights and the introduction of legislation that made conversion therapy illegal in Canada.

Following the 2015 election, Trudeau’s government established ambitious immigration targets, significantly increasing the intake of immigrants and refugees. Despite concerns about the effects of rising immigration on housing and public services, nearly 1 m

illion new permanent and temporary residents were admitted in both 2022 and 2023. Trudeau responded to concerns about housing affordability by banning foreign buyers and launching the Housing Accelerator Fund. However, by 2024, Canada faced a worsening housing crisis, contributing to declining public support for Trudeau. His approval rating dropped to 22% in December 2024, a stark contrast to the 65% approval he held in September 2016.

In 2021, Trudeau highlighted the success of the Child Benefit Program, stating that it had lifted 400,000 children out of poverty. However, by 2024, food bank usage had reached record levels, with an increasing number of working Canadians relying on food assistance amidst a global food crisis.

Key legislative milestones during Trudeau’s tenure included the legalization of medically-assisted dying in 2016 and the legalization of recreational cannabis in 2018. In 2021, he announced a national child care plan aimed at reducing daycare fees to $10 per day per child within five years. In November 2022, his government set a target to admit 500,000 immigrants annually by 2025, reflecting Canada's commitment to maintaining high immigration levels.

Personal Life of Justin Trudeau

Family Background

Justin Trudeau first met Sophie Grégoire during childhood in Montreal, as she was a classmate and close friend of his youngest brother, Michel. Years later, in June 2003, they reconnected when Grégoire, by then a well-known Quebec television personality, was assigned as Trudeau’s co-host for a charity event. Their friendship soon turned into a relationship, and by October 2004, they were engaged. The couple married on May 28, 2005, at Montreal's Sainte-Madeleine d'Outremont Church. Together, they have three children: a son, Xavier, a daughter, Ella-Grace, and a second son, Hadrien.

As Trudeau’s political career progressed, the family made significant residential changes. Two months after he was elected leader of the Liberal Party in June 2013, Trudeau and Grégoire sold their home in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood. They moved to a rental property in Rockcliffe Park, Ottawa, a community close to where Trudeau lived as a child when his father served as Prime Minister.

In August 2014, while Trudeau was in Winnipeg, an intruder broke into their Ottawa home while Grégoire and the children were asleep. The trespasser left a threatening note but did not steal anything or cause damage to the property. Following this incident, Trudeau expressed concerns about home security and sought guidance from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

After winning the 2015 federal election, Trudeau chose to reside at Rideau Cottage, located within the grounds of Rideau Hall, rather than the traditional prime ministerial residence at 24 Sussex Drive.

On August 2, 2023, Trudeau publicly announced that he and Grégoire had separated. A few weeks later, on August 21, he stated that his primary focus was on his children and the future.

Religious Beliefs

Trudeau was raised in a devout Catholic household. His father was a strong adherent of the faith, and his mother converted from Anglicanism to Catholicism before their marriage. However, as a teenager, Trudeau distanced himself from formal religious practices, considering himself a lapsed Catholic by the age of 18. He admitted that, like many others, he identified as Catholic but rarely attended church, aside from special occasions such as Easter or midnight Mass on Christmas.

Following the tragic loss of his brother Michel in 1998, Trudeau was encouraged by a friend to participate in an Alpha course, an experience that helped him reconnect with his faith. By 2011, he publicly affirmed the significance of his religious beliefs, stating that his personal faith played a crucial role in shaping his values and leadership approach.
