Payne embarked on a solo career, signing with Republic Records in North America. His debut single, Strip That Down, released in 2017, became a massive hit, reaching number three on the UK Singles Chart and number ten on the Billboard Hot 100. The track earned multi-platinum certifications in both the UK and the US. In 2018, he collaborated with Rita Ora on For You, a widely successful song that achieved gold or platinum status in multiple countries. Payne’s debut solo album, LP1, was released in December 2019. During the first three years of his solo career, he sold over 18 million singles, 2.4 million albums, and accumulated 3.9 billion streams. In addition to singing, Payne worked as a producer under the aliases Big Payno and Payno, remixing tracks for One Direction and British singer Cheryl.

Throughout his career, Payne faced struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues. On October 16, 2024, at the age of 31, he tragically passed away after falling from a third-floor hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina, while under the influence. His death was later ruled accidental, and five individuals were charged—two for supplying him with narcotics and three for criminal negligence. In the wake of his passing, his song Teardrops entered the UK Singles Chart, along with 11 of his previous works re-entering the charts.

Early Life and Education

Liam Payne was born at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton to parents Karen Payne, an infant nurse, and Geoff Payne, a fitter. He had two older sisters, Nicola and Ruth. Born three weeks premature, Payne suffered from health complications early in life, including a dysfunctional and scarred kidney, requiring numerous medical treatments. By the age of four, he underwent daily injections to manage his condition. Payne developed a passion for sports, particularly cross-country running, and was an active member of the Wolverhampton & Bilston Athletics Club. For three years, he ranked among the top three 1500m runners in the UK within his age category. At 12, he took up boxing to defend himself against bullying at school. He attended St Peter’s Collegiate School, where he completed 11 GCSEs, before studying music technology at City of Wolverhampton College. His introduction to performing arts came early when he joined the Pink Productions Theatre Company, playing Tony Manero from Saturday Night Fever. Payne also performed before a crowd of 26,000 at a Wolverhampton Wanderers football match, marking the beginning of his journey into entertainment.

Personal Life

Liam Payne was involved in several high-profile relationships throughout his life. From 2010 to late 2012, he dated The X Factor dancer Danielle Peazer. Following their split, he was in a relationship with childhood friend Sophia Smith from 2013 to 2015. In 2016, Payne began dating singer Cheryl, with whom he welcomed a son on March 22, 2017. The couple separated in 2018. In early 2019, Payne briefly dated British model and actress Naomi Campbell before beginning a relationship with model Maya Henry later that year. The couple got engaged in August 2020 but separated in June 2021. They later reconciled and got engaged again, but ultimately ended their relationship in May 2022. From October 2022 until his passing in 2024, Payne was in a relationship with influencer Kate Cassidy. At the height of his success, Payne had an estimated net worth of £47 million in 2020. He owned properties in Malibu, California, and Surrey but put both up for sale in early 2020 and 2021. Later, he moved to Chalfont St Giles, Buckinghamshire, to be closer to his son, having previously lived with Cheryl in Chalfont St Peter. A lifelong football fan, Payne supported West Bromwich Albion.

Political Views

Payne was a vocal supporter of pro-choice rights. In May 2019, he criticized Alabama’s anti-abortion legislation, stating that it stripped women of their rights and that men should not dictate women’s choices. In May 2020, he voiced his support for the Black Lives Matter movement, urging his followers to educate themselves and donate. He also attended Black Lives Matter protests in London.

Health Struggles

Throughout his career, Payne struggled with alcoholism. He previously spoke about his experiences of being isolated in hotel rooms with a fully stocked mini-bar during One Direction’s peak fame. In May 2023, Payne revealed that he had been sober for over three months. That July, he shared a video discussing his journey, including spending 100 days in a Louisiana rehab facility. In August 2023, he was hospitalized due to a severe kidney infection.

On June 1, 2022, Payne appeared intoxicated during an interview with Logan Paul. He claimed that One Direction was formed due to a promise from Simon Cowell and made controversial comments about former bandmate Zayn Malik. His remarks sparked backlash, leading him to later clarify and apologize.

Tragic Death

On October 2, 2024, Payne traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina, with his girlfriend Kate Cassidy to renew his U.S. O visa and attend Niall Horan’s The Show: Live on Tour concert at the Movistar Arena. He shared his travel plans on Snapchat and initially stayed in a luxury Airbnb before moving to a hotel due to delays in his visa approval. Cassidy returned to Florida on October 14, leaving Payne in Argentina. On October 16, a fan encountered Payne, who appeared sober and spoke about his positive experiences in Buenos Aires. Another hotel guest later recalled that Payne mentioned, “I used to be in a boyband, that’s why I’m so messed up.” Later that day, Payne fell from a third-floor balcony at the CasaSur hotel in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires. He was 31 years old. The hotel manager had placed an emergency call reporting "an aggressive man who appeared to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol." The manager warned authorities that the guest was destroying the room and posed a danger due to the balcony. Payne fell shortly after emergency services arrived, and his death was confirmed at 5:11 p.m. local time.

Medical reports indicated that Payne suffered a severe cranial fracture and other fatal injuries. Alberto Crescenti, director of Buenos Aires' emergency medical service, confirmed that Payne’s fall was from approximately 13–14 meters (43–46 feet), leaving "no possibility of resuscitation." Officials did not immediately determine whether the incident was an accident or a suicide. Security Ministry representative Pablo Policicchio stated that Payne "had jumped from the balcony of his room," but authorities later reviewed CCTV footage. Forensic experts suggested that Payne may have been in a semi-conscious or unconscious state at the time of his fall. Journalist Paula Varela reported that unreleased footage showed Payne fainting before accidentally falling from the balcony. Following his tragic passing, Payne’s song Teardrops entered the UK Singles Chart, along with 11 of his previous works re-entering the charts. Five individuals were later charged in connection with his death—two for supplying him with narcotics and three for criminal negligence, as he was deemed a danger to himself.

Career Overview

Early Career and The X Factor
Liam Payne first auditioned for The X Factor UK in 2008 at the age of 14, performing Frank Sinatra’s "Fly Me to the Moon." Judge Simon Cowell saw potential but felt he was too young and encouraged him to return in a few years. In 2010, Payne auditioned again, singing "Cry Me a River" by Michael Bublé. He impressed the judges and advanced to the Bootcamp stage but was eliminated as a solo artist. The judges later grouped him with fellow contestants Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, and Louis Tomlinson to form the boy band One Direction. The group finished in third place but quickly gained a massive following.

One Direction (2010–2016)
Following The X Factor, One Direction signed with Simon Cowell’s Syco Music and released their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful" in 2011, which became a global hit. Their debut album, Up All Night (2011), topped charts worldwide, marking the beginning of their record-breaking success.

Over five years, One Direction released five studio albums:

  • Up All Night (2011)
  • Take Me Home (2012)
  • Midnight Memories (2013)
  • Four (2014)
  • Made in the A.M. (2015)

The group embarked on multiple sold-out world tours and became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time, selling over 70 million records worldwide. Payne played a major role in songwriting, contributing to hits like "Little Things," "Story of My Life," and “Night Changes.” In 2015, Zayn Malik left the band, and One Direction continued as a four-member group. In 2016, they announced an indefinite hiatus, with members focusing on solo careers.

Solo Career Beginnings (2016–2018)
Following One Direction’s hiatus, Payne signed a solo record deal with Republic Records in North America. He explored a more mature, R&B-influenced sound. In May 2017, he released his debut solo single "Strip That Down," featuring Quavo. The song peaked at No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It received multi-platinum certifications in several countries and marked Payne’s successful transition into solo music. In early 2018, he collaborated with Rita Ora on "For You," the lead single for the Fifty Shades Freed soundtrack. The song became a hit across Europe, earning gold and platinum certifications. Payne released several other singles, including "Bedroom Floor" and "Familiar" (feat. J Balvin), both of which gained commercial success.

Debut Album: LP1 (2019–2020)
In December 2019, Payne released his debut studio album, LP1, featuring previously released singles and new tracks like "Stack It Up" (feat. A Boogie wit da Hoodie). The album showcased his R&B and pop influences but received mixed reviews from critics. Despite this, Payne sold over 18 million singles and 2.4 million albums in his first three years as a solo artist, accumulating nearly 4 billion streams.

Later Career and Hiatus (2021–2024)
Between 2021 and 2023, Payne took a step back from music to focus on personal struggles. He continued performing at events and released a few songs, including "Sunshine" (2021) for the animated film Ron's Gone Wrong. In 2023, he announced that he was working on his second studio album. He teased new music, hinting at a return to his R&B roots. However, his health issues and a rehab stay delayed progress.  Before his passing in 2024, Payne had expressed excitement about his comeback. Following his death, several of his songs re-entered the charts, and "Teardrops," an unreleased track, gained massive popularity.
