The Kefermarkt Altarpiece is a beautiful wooden artwork in the Late Gothic style, located in the parish church of Kefermarkt in Upper Austria. It was commissioned by knight Christoph von Zelking and finished around 1497. The central part shows Saints Peter, Wolfgang, and Christopher. The wing panels illustrate scenes from the life of Mary. The altarpiece also features a detailed top section and two figures of Saints George and Florian. The artist, called the Master of the Kefermarkt Altarpiece, is unknown, but at least two skilled sculptors likely created the main statues. Over time, the altarpiece lost its original paint and gold, and a big restoration was done in the 19th century by Adalbert Stifter. It is considered one of the greatest examples of late-medieval sculpture in the German-speaking world.
This image shows the upper-left wing panel, which depicts the birth of Christ. Mary is kneeling in devotion before the infant Jesus, who is placed on a fold of her dress. Joseph is also kneeling in front of the child. Above Mary, two angels are playing a mandolin and a lute on the roof. In the background, the annunciation to the shepherds is visible.
