Trump claims BRICS 'broke up' after tariff threat

Donald Trump's Claim on BRICS and Tariff Threats

On Friday, former U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the BRICS alliance "broke up" after he threatened a 150% tariff on member countries for actions undermining the U.S. dollar.

BRICS is an intergovernmental organization comprising ten nations: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.

According to Trump, BRICS nations were attempting to challenge the dominance of the U.S. dollar by creating an alternative currency. He claimed that upon taking office, he warned that any BRICS country advocating for the dollar’s destruction would face a 150% tariff on its goods. As a result, he asserted, the BRICS bloc "broke up."

Trump's Repeated Threats to BRICS Nations

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly warned BRICS nations of severe tariffs if they attempt to introduce a new currency. Even before taking office, he stated that the U.S. requires a commitment from BRICS countries that they will "neither create a new currency nor back any other currency to replace the mighty U.S. dollar."

"There is no chance that BRICS will replace the U.S. dollar in international trade, or anywhere else, and any country that tries should say hello to tariffs, and goodbye to America!" Trump posted on Truth Social.

Last week, Trump reiterated that BRICS nations could face 100% tariffs if they "play games" with the U.S. dollar. He also declared that the group was "dead," stating, "BRICS is dead since I mentioned that. BRICS died the minute I mentioned that."

Trump further criticized the bloc, claiming that BRICS was "put there for a bad purpose" and that most member nations no longer support it. "They're afraid to talk about it because I told them if they want to play games with the dollar, then they're going to be hit with a 100% tariff," he added.

What Is BRICS?

BRICS is an intergovernmental organization established in 2009, consisting of ten member countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates. It is the only major international group that does not include the United States.

Is BRICS Planning to Challenge the Dollar's Dominance?

In recent years, some BRICS member countries, particularly Russia and China, have explored alternatives to the U.S. dollar or the creation of a dedicated BRICS currency. This initiative is viewed as an effort to reduce reliance on the dollar as a primary medium of exchange and reserve currency.

According to EurAsia Daily, during the Kazan Summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin was presented with a symbolic "BRICS bill." However, Elvira Nabiullina, the head of Russia’s Central Bank, reportedly opposed the idea. India has not actively participated in this initiative so far.
