Zelenskyy: Trump’s Ukraine Peace Plan Must Prevent Future Russian Aggression
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has emphasized that any peace plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump must not only end the ongoing war but also prevent future Russian aggression. Speaking in an interview broadcast on Sunday, Zelenskyy insisted that a long-term security framework must be established to avoid repeating past failures.
Ukraine, he noted, had previously engaged in peace talks and agreements that ultimately failed to deter Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. To prevent history from repeating itself, he stressed the need for concrete security guarantees.
“A frozen conflict will only lead to further aggression,” Zelenskyy told ITV. “Who, then, will be recognized in history as the victor? No one. It would be a total defeat for all involved—both for us and, importantly, for Trump.”
His remarks highlight Ukraine’s firm stance that any settlement must go beyond a temporary ceasefire and ensure lasting stability in the region.
Zelenskyy: Ukraine Needs Security Guarantees to End War with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stressed that any effort to end the war must not only bring immediate peace but also ensure that Russian President Vladimir Putin cannot wage war against Ukraine again. Speaking in an interview withITV, Zelenskyy underlined that true victory would come only with long-term security measures.
“He needs not just to end the war. He needs to act so that Putin has no chance to wage war on us again. This is the main thing, and everyone should recognize that. That would be a victory,” Zelenskyy stated.
He reiterated his willingness to engage in talks with Russia, provided Ukraine’s Western allies—the United States and the European Union—remain actively involved.
“If I had an understanding that America and Europe will not abandon us, that they will support us and provide security guarantees, I would be ready for any format for talks,” he said. “If there are security guarantees, we can then speak of an end to the ‘hot phase’ of the war. We need to know how this war will end and that we stand together with America and Europe.”
Zelenskyy also reaffirmed that Ukraine would not hold elections while the war continues, citing security concerns and the need to maintain martial law. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed Zelenskyy’s legitimacy in any negotiations, arguing that he has remained in office beyond his mandate.
Zelenskyy: Lifting Martial Law Would Weaken Ukraine’s Defense Against Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has ruled out holding elections while the war continues, warning that suspending martial law would severely weaken the country’s military defense.
“We would have to suspend martial law, and if we suspend martial law, we lose the army,” Zelenskyy said. “And, in principle, the Russians would be happy. It’s a matter of military capability, morale, and everything that would be lost.”
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy has proposed a deal with the United States, offering Ukraine’s rare earths and other critical minerals in exchange for continued financial support for its war effort. Ukrainian officials have also held discussions with Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg.
Former U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he would likely meet Zelenskyy next week to discuss possible ways to end the war. However, reports about Trump’s communication with Russian President Vladimir Putin remain uncertain. Over the weekend, The New York Post claimed that Trump had spoken to Putin by phone regarding a resolution to the conflict, but Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that he could neither confirm nor deny the report.
