Jasprit Bumrah ruled out, India name revised Champions Trophy squad with two changes
Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Harshit Rana Named Replacement
In a major setback for Team India, fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which begins on February 19. Bumrah sustained a lower back injury during the final Test against Australia in Sydney last month and has not regained full fitness. He will be replaced by Harshit Rana in the squad.
This is the second time in five years that Bumrah will miss a major ICC tournament due to injury, having previously been sidelined from the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. The BCCI confirmed the news in an official statement, saying:
"Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy due to a lower back injury. The Men’s Selection Committee has named Harshit Rana as Bumrah’s replacement."
Meanwhile, spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has earned a place in the squad following his strong performances in the T20I series against England, where he took 14 wickets in five matches. His efforts led to an ODI call-up in Cuttack, where he picked up 1/54.
With Bumrah ruled out, India's bowling lineup will see changes, with Harshit Rana and Varun Chakaravarthy expected to play crucial roles in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025.
Team India has announced a last-minute change to their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad, with spinner Varun Chakaravarthy replacing Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was initially included in the provisional squad. The BCCI confirmed the decision in an official statement.
"Team India have also named Varun Chakaravarthy in the squad. The spinner will replace Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was initially named in the provisional squad," the statement read.
Following this change, Jaiswal has been moved to the non-traveling reserves, joining Mohammed Siraj and Shivam Dube. These three players will be available as backup options and will travel to Dubai if required.
Major Setback for India as Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out of ICC Champions Trophy 2025
India suffered a massive blow ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out due to a lower back injury. The Men in Blue, who have won the prestigious tournament twice (2002, 2013), will now be without their most reliable bowler in the highly anticipated event.
Since making a comeback from a previous back injury, Bumrah has been India’s standout performer across formats. The 31-year-old pacer played a crucial role in India's victorious 2024 T20 World Cup campaign, where he was named Player of the Tournament after picking up 15 wickets at a staggering average of 8.26.
Bumrah also led India’s bowling attack in the five-match Test series against Australia, which the visitors lost 3-1. Despite India's struggles, Bumrah was exceptional, finishing with 32 wickets in nine innings at an astonishing average of 13.06. His relentless workload during the tour raised concerns, especially during the fourth Test in Melbourne, where he was visibly exhausted and signaled to captain Rohit Sharma not to give him the old ball.
The injury appeared to worsen on Day 2 of the fifth Test in Sydney, where Bumrah, who was captaining in Rohit’s absence, walked off the field and was later seen leaving the stadium for scans. He did not return to bowl in the second innings.
Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, while announcing the squad for the ongoing ODI series against England and the Champions Trophy, had expressed hope that Bumrah would regain fitness for the later stages of the tournament. Speaking at a press conference in Mumbai alongside Rohit Sharma, Agarkar had stated, "With Bumrah, we are waiting to hear about his fitness and when he's likely to be available. At the moment, it doesn’t look like he will be fit for the first couple of games, but we will have more clarity in the coming week."
However, BCCI’s latest announcement confirmed Bumrah’s unavailability, forcing India to name Harshit Rana as his replacement. The absence of their premier fast bowler could significantly impact India’s bowling attack in the tournament.
Injury Woes Continue for Jasprit Bumrah as Back Issues Resurface Ahead of ICC Champions Trophy 2025
India's premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has once again been sidelined due to a back injury, raising concerns over his recurring fitness issues ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Bumrah’s unique bowling action, which has been a key weapon in his success, has also led to frequent stress on his back throughout his career.
This is not the first time the 31-year-old pacer has suffered from a back-related injury. In September 2019, he was diagnosed with a minor stress fracture in his lower back, which kept him out of action for nearly three months. His injury troubles resurfaced in 2022, forcing him to miss the Asia Cup in August and September, followed by the T20 World Cup later that year.
On that occasion, Bumrah had to undergo surgery, leading to a 10-month-long rehabilitation process, during which he missed a significant portion of international cricket. His much-anticipated return came in July 2023, when he captained India in a three-match T20I series against Ireland.
With his latest injury forcing him out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, India now faces a major setback as they lose their most lethal bowler ahead of the crucial tournament.
