IND beat ENG by 4 wickets to take 1-0 lead in Nagpur
India defeated England by four wickets in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday. Shubman Gill (87), Shreyas Iyer (59), and Axar Patel (52) contributed crucial half-centuries to India’s successful chase.
Earlier, England was invited to bat after Jos Buttler won the toss. The visitors posted a total of 248 runs, with Jacob Bethell (51
) and Jos Buttler (52) leading the charge with half-centuries. Ravindra Jadeja (3/26) and Harshit Rana (3/53) were the standout bowlers for India.
Virat Kohli missed the match due to a knee injury, while Rohit Sharma was dismissed for just 2 runs, continuing India’s struggles after disappointing showings against New Zealand, Australia, and in the Ranji Trophy.
India gave a debut to Harshit Rana, who took three wickets in the fourth T20I in Pune. The pitch for the match was a red-soil wicket, prompting India to opt for three seamers.
Shreyas Iyer Steps in for Virat Kohli in 1st ODI Against England
Shreyas Iyer revealed after India’s victory over England in the first ODI that he was not originally set to play in the match but was called up after Virat Kohli pulled out due to a sore knee on match day. The revelation surprised many as it had been initially thought that Yashasvi Jaiswal was the one to replace Kohli in the lineup.
Iyer's inclusion highlights India’s strategic shift ahead of the Champions Trophy, with head coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly preferring a left-right combination in the batting order. Iyer shared that he had always kept himself prepared for a call-up, knowing his chance could come at any time, as he had experienced similar situations in the past.
India’s middle-order was expected to feature Iyer, given his aggressive batting style, but the team's preference to play KL Rahul as the wicketkeeper and Hardik Pandya in the lower order has kept Rishabh Pant out of the ODI setup. With Shubman Gill likely to take the No.3 spot, Virat Kohli would drop to No.4, followed by Axar Patel, Rahul, or Pandya, depending on the match situation.
Iyer, who contributed a brilliant fifty in the game, said he received a call from Rohit Sharma the night before, informing him of Kohli’s injury. He joked that he quickly went to bed after the news.
Parthiv Patel, the commentator, shared his surprise, admitting that they had assumed Jaiswal was the replacement and had not anticipated Iyer’s inclusion. The upcoming second ODI will likely provide further clarity on India’s preferred lineup for the series.
